As well a certain pagan rituals and other popular beliefs haunt the island since the end of time, Corsica has always been in majority Catholic. Today religious traditions are still very alive on the island.

Fervent Corsican religion passes the single observation of the mass, its on integrated part of its culture and way of life.
Each hamlet has its own chapel, but the mass is said in the parochial churches, many of them of remarkable architecture. St Devote is the patron saint of the island yet each town and village celebrate its patron saint as it should.
The island also counts several protestant temples in Ajaccio and Pietranera and a Catholic church from the Greek rite in Cargese its interesting to note it share a priest with the Roman catholic one right opposite. No Moslman mosque is mentioned.

Eastern has the largest religious celebrations on the island. Dozens of Processions with hooded penance seeking pardon, under heavy chains appear in the streets in the islands cities. From Bonifaccio to "Cap Corse" the religious brotherhood of unknown some are 7 centuries old, continue these traditions.
The most famous Corsican procession takes place in Sartene, being the most spectacular and moving completely dominated by the torment of "Catenacciu" an anonymous repentant disguised by a hood and dressed in red. To be forgiven for his sins, known only by the priest , he carries a heavy cross, base footed for several hours with chains weighing up to almost 43 kilos. Followed but never helped, by the brothers of the one he killed, he falls 3 times to the sound of the ancient pain full "Perdono, mio Dio, mio Dio, perdono".
In Bonifacio, Good Friday evening, five brotherhoods meet towards the church, the penitents carrying heavy chains, some weighing up to almost 800 kilos. In northern Corsica the snail "granitola" procession is practiced following a complicated spiral itinerary.
In Calvi during Eastern week Christ's passion is re-enacted with Corsican songs which are truly moving.
Other rituals like the "Cerca" in Erbalunga in the Cap drive the penitents to climb the mountains on knee stopping at all the chapels around.
