GEOGRAPHY : Climate

A Mediterranean climate. Very hot summers and mild winters……

The climate is mostly Mediterranean. It’s the 4th reason why the tourists come to Corsica, after nature, discovery and relatives.
The geographical situation of the island as well as the dimension determines the climatic identity of Corsica. The rain, slightly dependant on the altitude, is indisputably referee of the weather, while the topography of places charge the temperatures heavily.
The pure Mediterranean Climate exists up for about 600 meters ; it’s the main climate which covers almost 2/3 of the island. There the summers are very hot and sunny with a maximum of 36°c and an average water temperature of 25°c. Winters are mild with heavy and regular rains (600 to 800 mm shared amongst a few number of days 50-70 days a year).
The average temperature is 16°c.
High altitude Mediterranean climate (from 600-1200m) covers more than a quarter of
the country. It’s the Corsican mountain climate cultivated and inhabited until 900 meters ; pastures and forests above. There the average temperature is 10°c. Summers are always hot and sunny on the contrary Winters are hard with below 0°c temperatures. Rains are heavy about 8000-1500 mm per year.
Climate in the Alpine zone dominates 12% of the territory. It is characterized by heavy rains persisting, snow coverage (from October to about June) and low Winter temperatures.
Generally the island counts an average temperatures above 25°c from June to September and 20°c starting March till October. Winters are mild, rainy, now on the summits after magnificent landscapes, skiing is possible several months a year. The wind blows quite often .Spring is the perfect season, nature is flowering, the mountain still snowy and the sea already blue making dreamy landscapes.
Indian Summer with its splendid colours is a real beauty performance for those who have the chance to continue their vacations.
