This city would have been based by Greek towards 565 before J-C. it was in the center of numerous confrontations among Etruscan, Carthaginian and Phocean.
Whereas Marius based Mariana in the North, rival perpetual Sylla , having subjected the inhabitants of the coast, created new Aléria.

In the XV-th century, Aléria became Genoese, these last ones strengthening it to make a real arsenal of it. So, in spite of these precautions, the fortress (fort Matra) did not resist to the uprising of the Corsican revolutionaries.

Accommodated in fort Matra, the museum collects the most eloquent vestiges found on the site. (amphoras, sculptures); the Jérôme Carcopino museum, bears the name of the big latinist of Corsican origin.

The Church San Marcello which dates the XIX-th century, adjoins the museum. The nef was probably built in the XII-th century.

Urbino's pond, situated in the South of Aléria, less deep than that of Diana, conceals numerous wading birds, ash herons and aigrettes for example, spend there the winter.

Finally, in the South of the pond is a magnificent and protected site, a reserve created in 1951.
