GUIDED-TOUR : Venaco

• In the heart of the Corsican National Park :

The Venaco region (U Venachese) lies in the heart of the Corsican mountains in the National Park.

The main road and the railway line between Ajaccio and Bastia run through the Venaco region which extends from the magnificent forest of Vizzavona to the gates of Corte, the historic capital of the island.

Naturally fortified by mount Rotondu (2 622 m) and mount Cardu (2 543 m), stepped in pastoral tradition, the region still sees the seasonal migration of the flocks.

Shepherds are the guardians of the region which is famous for its cheese, the most prestigious of Corsica.

The history of the region is everywhere apparent; in its heritage, its baroque churches, its stone shepherd’s huts.

With its many rivers, its exceptionally riche flora and fauna, the region is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor types.

The Venaco region comprises nine villages : A Casanova, Muracciole, Nuceta, U Poghju di Venacu, A Riventosa, Ruspigliani, San Petru di Venacu, Venacu, Vivariu (with the hamlets of Vizzavona, Tatto, Canaglia).

• A patchwork of villages set in a lush green landscape :

Nestling among forest of larico pine, beech, chestnut, they cling to the slopes of the wild and beautiful mountains.

Take in the magnificent vistas of the forest-clad mountains and of the pasture lands from the many panoramic viewing points.

Meet the shepherds, try their “Brocciu”, visit their “Casgili” and “Pagliaghji”.

Try the delicious specialities of the region where the local restaurants still serve traditional dishes made with local cheese and brocciu.

• A haven for outdoor pursuits :

In this wooded unspoilt environment you can enjoy all sorts of activities.

Bathing in rivers, trout fishing; hunting and shooting, hiking along marked trails, mountain biking, pony trekking, climbing, caving, white-water sports.

• You must see :

- The “Pont du Vecchju”, a viaduct designed by Gustave Eiffel.
- The panoramic views from the Murellu (Nuceta) and Bellagranaghju (Venacu) mountain passes.
- The forests of Rospo-Sorba (Nuceta – Ruspigliani), Vezzani and Vizzavona.
- The “Cascade des Anglais” (a waterfall in Vizzavona forest).
- The French tower in Vivariu.
- The Altiani Genoan Bridge
- The piscine de Venacu, a sports centre (tennis, swimming pool, football) in an exceptional setting.

• Not to be missed...

- The “Fiera di u Casgiu” in Venacu; this cheese fair which takes place at the beginning of May attracts thousands of visitors.
