HISTORY : Corsica in the Second World War

history corsica corte centre corse niolu
Corsica provided some great heroes to the resistance such as Danielle Casanova, Fred Scamaroni and Jean Nicoli.

In 1942, the submarine Casabianca, under the order of commandant l’Herminier, landed weapons and equipment on to Arona Beach close to Piana.

The uprising of the population against the Italians the following year made Corsica the first French department liberated. Actually the 12,000 armed Corsicans who participated in the War for liberation of the island, many became victims.

Most of the Heroes of the resistance were tortured and executed by the fascists.
The armed effect would not be sufficient anyway to reconcile Corsica and France totally. May nationalistic movements would see the day several years later.
